We give a lot of thought to how a business can increase the general level of good in the world. We beleive it begins with a commitment to non-violence and compassion in our everyday business practices.
When you cancel, we refund whatever you have paid up-front, pro-rated to the day (subject to a $2 minimum refund amount). You'd be surprised how many subscription-based services do not give refunds after a certain period or charge an "early termination fee".
We believe it is your money until we give you the service. Letting you pay a year in advance is a convenience we offer, not a risk we force on you.
We find this unethical on several levels.
First, promising unlimited bandwidth is misleading. Long before you could use all that bandwidth, you would hit the other resource limits of the server (CPU, memory).
Similarly, promising unlimited disk space is an outright lie--disks are limited physical entities. A hosting provider could not provide an unlimited amount of space even if they wanted to. But beyond that, each server costs money, and so disk space is a resource. Selling unlimited resources for a fixed fee makes no sense. It's a marketing gimmick that is misleading and irresponsible.
Because of these issues, most companies promising unlimited bandwidth or disk space have clauses in their Terms of Service to the effect of "We reserve the right to suspend service or ask you to upgrade if your account is using an unreasonable amount of resources."
We would rather be upfront about what you are paying for and know that we can give you what we promise.
There's no question that some business make a lot of money promising the moon. We don't think it's right.
We would rather direct you to a company that will meet your needs perfectly than have you pay us and not get what you need.
Especially in a field like technology, where many customers aren't completely sure about what they are trying to buy, we believe it is imperative to advise people based on their true needs, not on the desire to make a sale.
